Know All About -Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN)


TAN – Tax Deduction Account Number is 10 digits alphanumeric number.

What is TAN?

TAN or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10 digit alphanumeric number required to be obtained by all persons who are responsible for deducting or collecting tax. Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

It is mandatory to quote the Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) allotted by the Income Tax Department (ITD) on all TDS returns (including any e-TDS/TCS return), any TDS/TCS payment challan, and TDS/TCS certificates.


Who is required to Apply for TAN?

Persons who are required to deduct tax at source or collect tax at source on behalf of the Income Tax Department are required to apply for and obtain TAN.


How to Apply for TAN?

A deductor may either make an online application in Form 49B or submit a physical TAN Application to any TIN-Facilitation Center (TIN-FC) of NSDL.

Types of TAN Applications

There are two types of TAN applications:

1.Application for issuance of new TAN (Form 49B). This application form should be used when the deductor has never applied for a TAN or does not have a TAN.

2. Form for Change or Correction in TAN data for TAN Allotted.


Fee for TAN Application

The processing fee for both the applications (new TAN and change request) is  Rs. 65 (including Goods and Service Tax). (RS. 55.00 application charge + 18.00% Goods & Services Tax).


From Where to get the Physical Application Forms

Applicants may obtain the application forms from TIN-FCs, any other vendors providing such forms, or can freely download the same from this link-View/Download.


Track TAN Application Status

After making the TAN application the applicants may track it using 14 digit unique Acknowledgement Number after three days.

After visiting this link:

1. Select the option “TAN-New / Change Request”. in the “Application Type

2. Enter the Ack. Number

3. Enter the code shown and click on the “Submit” button.
